Yesterday started out a little sad as I sent Linda off on the shuttle to catch her flight home. But things picked up for me as the day went along. My drive from Denver, through Wyoming and in to South Dakota went very well. The skies were clear, the wind was at my back and the ride through the Black Hills was spectacular. I am now staying with friends in Belle Fourche, SD. I’ll be staying here today and then moving on east toward home.
My thoughts have been lingering on what it means to be a disciple of Christ. And as a disciple what my purpose should be. I would imagine if I was to ask folks what they believed the purpose of the church is, I would get similar but varied answers. Jesus, the teacher, does instruct His disciples (students) on what their purpose is in Matthew 28:19-20, that being, to “make disciples” and then as you make those disciples “baptizing” them and “teaching” them. I have come to believe that there are so many differences among us because we have “discipled” ourselves to someone or something other than the right “teacher”, Jesus. It might be beneficial to all of us to take some time and reexamine who or what we are following. Is it Jesus or something we have been fed by someone or some organization that claims to be from Jesus? As Jesus said, “It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher…” (Matthew 10:25) but of course that assumes that the “disciple” is actually working toward that goal.
I am still pondering a lot of things concerning discipleship, like what does it mean to “make disciples” but as I go I am looking forward for my teacher to show me the way.
