Throughout God’s story, He has been doing everything He can to teach His people on how to be in a right relationship with Him as well as with each other. But as we have seen throughout The Story, no matter how many lessons are taught, the majority don’t seem to get it. I am reminded of the old saying, “You give them books and they eat the pages.” Although we have seen many examples of those who did understand and were in a right relationship with God, many others chose to reject God’s instruction through His Word and continued to do their own thing.

As we move forward in God’s story, God takes the next step by sending His Son from the upper story into the lower story to show His people how being in a right relationship with Him is supposed to work. As John makes clear in his gospel, when he states that, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” And then in verse 14, he tells us that “The Word became flesh…”. In the rest of those first 18 verses, he tells us why God, the Son, came down from the upper story to be with His people in the lower story. He is our light in the darkness, our way to become “children of God”, the source of truth and grace and the “One and Only” who has shown us God. But as John also tells us, although the light shines in the darkness, “the darkness has not understood it”. Even though God came and dwelt in the world, “the world did not recognize Him”. He had shown them how to become “children of God” through belief in Him but many chose to not believe and reject the source of “truth and grace”.

The problem has been and will always be that most will not make the effort to be part of God’s story and will instead chose to write their own story. God has made it clear from the very beginning that it is His story and we can either chose to be part of it or continue to reject it. Most have a Bible but instead of reading it have chosen either to rely on someone else to tell them what it says or they just don’t care what it has to say to them. The Word, Jesus, came to give those who will believe in His name, “the right to become children of God”.  If you are unsure as to whether or not you are a part of His family, all you have to do is to see and hear what He has to say to you through His Word. As the apostle Paul would right to his letter to the Romans,  “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes… (Romans 1:16) and “faith comes from hearing the message and the message is heard through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17)
